TECH GEAR
Mobile Devices We Like:
T-Mobile Sidekick and Sidekick II
Easy to use, unbusinesslike and not too techy-looking, we like the Sidekick 'cause it's easy on the thumbs for typing and is probably the most comfortable cell phone and text-messaging device in terms of keyboard size and design.

Palm Treo 650
The treo 650 is to the Sidekick what Prada dress shoes are to Adidas sneakers. Despite that analogy, the Treo will not win points for style compared to many cell phones, though the Treo is well-designed and nice on the eyes. The Treo is a so-called Smartphone and runs an OS for its Palm PDA functionality. Part phone, part PDA and part e-mail and Internet-enabled handheld computer, the 650 comes in slightly different versions for Cingular, Verizon, and Sprint. The best part of the 650 is its keyboard and high-resolution color screen.

Mel Gibson's Mug Shot Released

melgibson_mugshot_photo.jpg

The Los Angeles Country Sheriff's Department has released the mug shot of Mel Gibson taken after his arrest last weekend following a DUI incident that has now become an international scandal.

Air Massive's crack team of mug-shot photo analysts (MSPAs) has examined the newly released image and has compiled the following notes ...

First, notice the sad eyes Gibson displays in the photo. Is he employing some of that thespiatic Mel magic and "acting" sad in an attempt to present himself as a sympathetic figure? Or is he just really sad? Notice how his eyes are glassy, indication of heavy alcohol consumption.

Second: Is it just us or has Mel recently had hair implants put in? Pay particular attention to the area of Gibson's scalp near the center-forehead hairline. And what's with that gelled look on the forelock sticking out in front?

Third: Mel Gibson's shirt is -- we're guessing -- some sort of Hugo Boss or Armani number that he paid $675.00 for retail, but it still looks bad on him. We're presuming that when you got a $850 million dollar fortune, you don't have to give a shit about what other people think of your appearance. (And, dude, Mel, do something about the chest hair -- wax on, wax off!)

Fourth: Is Mel smirking into the camera? It does look like a smile. Dude, Mel, you are one cheeky bastard. We think that Gibson's PR people had a strategy in place a long time ago and told Mel to remember one very important thing in the event that he should ever get arrested: smile for your mug shot. Because, even though it's a mug shot, it's going to get splattered across the media landscape like a million eggs on the windshield of a Ferrari going 80 down PCH -- and you're gong to want to look like a nice, normal, positive guy with a nice, normal, positive smile that counters the negative sting of a mug shot.

Mega-Celebrity Mel Gibson Arrested for DUI, Allegedly Spews Anti-Semitic Crap, Hurls F-Bomb to Cops

gibson_publicitystill.jpg

Last Friday, Mel Gibson was arrested after what started out as a routine police stop for speeding and for suspected driving under the influence of alcohol, but then Gibson allegedly went on a drunken rant, spewing a series of anti-semitic remarks at the L.A. Country Sheriff officers.

If your are on the editorial teams at the Star, US Weekly, People or on the production teams of Access Hollywood, Entertainment Tonight or any news outlet in any medium that devotes serious gossip coverage, then today is the kind of day you dream of, a day when a supernova Hollywood name falls from grace in a big, bad, ugly and shit-faced way. Today is that day.

Although the incident happended late last Friday night, today was the first proper day of the media-machine work week. Which means Gison has had time to prepare for the initial fall-out. In the meantime, Gibson and his PR firm-lawyer-agent-starfucking-industrial complex have had the actor/producer/director issue an apology and announce plans to go into rehab.

The media are already speculating about the end of Mel's career, but we're not buying it. As offensive, despicable and scandalous as his alleged actions are, we're predicting that his career will be damaged a little, but in the end he will be forgiven by most and remain the powerful Hollywood player that he is, though the reality is that much of that will hinge on the success or failure of his upcoming film, "Apocalypto."

The real question Mel should be asking right now is "What would Jesus do?"

"Tabloid Wars" is Our New Favorite TV Show

tabloid-wars-still.jpg

We caught the premier episode of "Tabloid Wars" Monday night on Bravo. The show is a kind of reality series that chronicles life at the New York Daily News, one of three tabloid-format newspapers in Gotham's hyper-competitive media world. The real war, however, is between just two papers: the Daily News and the love-hated, Rupert Murdoch-owned New York Post. It's not clear if there will be any behind-the-scenes peaks at the journalists and editors at the Post, but it's no matter -- the journalists and editors at the Daily News are colorful and interesting enough to keep us riveted. As former journalists who spent time working at daily newspapers in the 1990's, we admitedly have a soft spot for the subject matter. The show offers viewers a rare look at the people who do the street-level reporting -- the critical, core pavement-pounding legwork -- and the editing and writing with passion and dedication and a sense of healthy, driven competiveness. "Tabloid Wars" is our new favorite TV show. What was our favorite before "Tabloid Wars," you ask? Well ... we'd have to say it was a tie between "Aqua Teen Hunger Force," "Entourage" and "The Colbert Report." Goodbye "truthiness," hello "truth."

Snickers' "Satisfectellent" Ad Campaign

satisfectellent.jpg

From New York to Los Angeles, all across the country, you've been seeing those simple, inexplicable ads for Snickers chocolate bars. The ads show the easily recognizable and identifiable brand-logo treatment that's on every Snickers wrapper. Except that when you see these ads, instead of the Snickers name there's some other word, a made mashup of a word that 's supposed to amuse you with its cleverness and make you think about Snickers. The words are "Satisfectellent," "Hungerectomy," "Substantialicious," "Nougatocity," and "Peanutopolis." They're not defined in the ads, but you know what they mean. In a review of the ads, an advertising creative director named Thomas Sherman dissects the campaign and reveals Snickers astonishing falure to capitalize fully on the ad concept. To put in Snickers' terms, while the idea behind the might be satifectellent, it isn't substantialiscious.

Celebrity Big Brother for India

The hit reality TV series Big Brother is going to Bollywood. Endemol India, a television production company in India, will produce a celebrity version of the series for a South Asian audience. Accordinging to a BBC story, the show will have an inter-faith dimension, casting both Muslim and Hindu participants. Sex, however, will be something of a taboo on the show. Given the conservatism of Indian society, the producers will ban any "hanky-panky," says the BBC. The Big Brother reality series was originally developed by a Dutch production company in 1999, but has since grown into a worldwide franchise.

Why NYC Radio Station Hot 97 Has Been the Scene of So Many Hip-Hop Gun Battles

Hot 97 has been one of the most popular and influential radio stations for fans of hip-hop in New York City. The station -- especially its biggest DJ and personality, Funkmaster Flex -- has in past been so influential that it had the power to practically turn unknown local rap artists into major stars almost overnight. In many ways, Hot 97 is the most important radio station for hip-hop itself. The station is a destination for hip-hop artists and their entourages, who come in to do the all-important Hot 97 live interview or freestyle rap performance. With so many rap stars and their posses coming and going to and from Hot 97's West Village studios, the building that is home to the station has been the scene of many shooting incidents and fights between rival posses ,and even DJs, as this recent New Yorker article explains. Apparently, Hot 97's success may be in decline, and its home in the West Village may be in doubt, as its neighbors are fed up with the violent clashes on their doorstep.

Artist Makes Paintings of Web Sites

internetpainting.jpg

Since 1998, artist Valery Grancher has been painting pictures of well-known Web site interfaces like those of Google, Wired News, and Hotmail
. In the text explaining the concept, Grancher has said "For artist from my generation, we grew up with video games and computers. The first iconology I perceived were icons from interface and software. The screen has defined a new window and has killed the camera obscura. Pictured above is Grancher's "Hotmail.com" from 2004 (acrylic and charcoal on canvas).

Materazzi vs. Zidane - You Write the Dialog ...

There is another entry among the crop of inspired Materazzi-Zidane Web sites that have been popping up on the Internet since the World Cup final and the unforgetable head-butting incident. The site is called Materazzi Says and on it you can write the dialog you think Italy's Marcos Materaazi exchanged with France's Zinedine Zidane before the latter head-butted his opponent. After you write your version, you can play back a video of infamous incident and see your words in the video as subtitles. Neato!

"Brazilname" - What You Would Be Called if You Played Soccer For Brazil

airmassiveincha.jpg

Have you ever wondered what your "Brazilname" (your Brazilian nickname) would be if you played soccer for Brazil? Instead of a last name, almost all of the great Brazilian players use a one-name nickname professionally. Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Kaka and Dida are just a few examples. These names are on the backs of their uniforms and used by the press. Now you can see what yours would be by using the Brazilname generator. Just key in your first and last names, pick a jersey number, hit the generate button and -- Presto! -- you have your nickname. If Air Massive was a Brazilian futbol star, we would be called "Airmassiveincha."

Beyond Cheesy: David Hasselhoff's "Secret Agent Man" Music Video

Really, you've got to see it to believe it. Former "Baywatch" and "Knightrider" star, and 1980's and 90's German pop-music sensation, David Hasselhoff has recorded a cover version of the tune "Secret Agent Man" and filmed a video for the song. The "It's so good it's bad" idea doesn't even apply here. It's just a really, really, really cheesy bad pop music video. And, yet, we can't help but watch the cheesy badness. It's what an old college roommate of ours would call "strangely compelling." That's entertainment, we suppose.

Project Runway Returns for Season 3

projectrunwayseason3.jpg

The critically-acclaimed and popular reality show series Project Runway returns for its third season. Episode one aired on Bravo Wednesday evening, introducing us to 15 new aspiring designers. The new face among the guest judges is Kate Spade (who we recently bumped into in person at a Starbucks on the Upper East Side of New York). It seems like there's a lot more diversity among the designers in terms of styles this time. Season three looks like it's going to be super juicy. SPOILER WARNING: The first Project Runway dismissee is ... Stacy. auf Wiedersehen!

Gawker Media Mogul Nick Denton's Art to Gaining Media Attention Revealed

Slate has an essay explaining how Internet media-mogul Nick Denton is able to gain so much effective publicity for his stable of Gawker Media sites, which include Gawker, Wonkette and Defamer. Denton, a former Financial Times journalist, seems to keenly understand how the media works and how to deal with journos and editors by limiting his interviews and quotes to only certain types of publications at certain times, measuring his remarks carefully and serving them with a dollop of British understatement.

Syd Barrett, R.I.P.

Syd Barrett, the seminal 1960's British pyschedelic musician and founding member of Pink Floyd, passed away this past week in England. The BBC has published a detailed obituary. Barrett became a famous recluse after leaving the group due to drug problems and mental illness. The subsequent and now classic Pink Floyd songs "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" and "Wish You Were Here," from the band's influential 1975 album "Wish Your Were Here," were oblique references to their former bandmate Barrett. Rest in peace, Syd.

DVD Movie Night: "Capote"

"Capote" is worth renting if only to see actor Philip Seymour Hoffman's portrayal of the effete and blazingly intelligent author Truman Capote. It's an amazing performance. Hoffman truly earned his Oscar. The movie is superbly crafted and beautiful to look at. Dare we say, it is as close to perfection as a film can be. And yet, there was something missing from it, something we had hungered deeply for perhaps, and that something is more about Capote the man, the writer, the celebrity and his formative experiences beyond what the film affords us. Admittedly, "Capote" is not a biopic, it's not meant to be one. The movie is about a specific period of time in the writer's career and a specific experience -- the writing of his ground-breaking non-fiction crime book about the convicted murderers of a Kansas family in the 1950's.

Wired News and Wired Magazine Reunited After 8 Years!

Wired News is being reunited with Wired Magazine after the two historically related but seperately owned and published media entities had been apart for eight years. The print magazine was bought by Conde Nast in the late 1990's, whereas the online-only Wired News was owned by Lycos. Part of this arrangement explicitly prevented Wired magazine from pursuing a Web presence beyond simply having its monthly magazine content hosted on the Wired News site. This made for the sadly ironic circumstances in which the most fervent, forward-thinking and influential magazine covering the culture of the Internet and technology did not have its own Web site. Now that the two are again part and parcel of the same publishing family, think of the possibilites.
