Midnight Snack - Volume One
(Astralwerks )

With all of the great stuff put out by Astralwerks over the past few years, why is this compilation such a let-down? Is it because compilations, more often than not, are the result of a relentless binge-and-purge due to manic genre-feasting? Perhaps it's because most compilations lack the very dynamic range they purport to convey; indeed, as with most in its vein, "Midnight Snack, Volume 1" falls predictably within mid-level sonic range. It's a shame, considering solid tracks like Atjazz's "Everything" and Aim's "Cold Water Music" get lost in the shuffle. Sorry, this is "safe listening" only. With the ultra-typical Nude Dimensions series in tow, Astralwerks is breaking new ground for the non-adventurous listener. My solution: zero in on whatever choice tracks you might find in there and go straight to the source instead. Better to risk an few extra hundred yen than to settle for mediocrity. - Jonathan Hanemann
