Overheard...

Guy talking into cellphone on West Broadway in Soho, NYC:

"Hey man, can you hear me? Got a new cell phone -- it's a Treo, man! That's right, a Treo. Yeah, the Palm Treo 650 and it's aaaawesome ... uh ... hello, can you hear me? Hello? Hello ... Shit!"

TECH GEAR
Mobile Devices We Like:
T-Mobile Sidekick and Sidekick II
Easy to use, unbusinesslike and not too techy-looking, we like the Sidekick 'cause it's easy on the thumbs for typing and is probably the most comfortable cell phone and text-messaging device in terms of keyboard size and design.

Palm Treo 650
The Treo 650 is to the Sidekick what Prada dress shoes are to Adidas sneakers. Despite that analogy, the Treo will not win points for style compared to many cell phones, though the Treo is well-designed and nice on the eyes. The Treo is a so-called Smartphone and runs an OS for its Palm PDA functionality. Part phone, part PDA and part e-mail and Internet-enabled handheld computer, the 650 comes in slightly different versions for Cingular, Verizon, and Sprint. The best part of the 650 is its keyboard and high-resolution color screen.

NYC Truck Graffiti by "Faro"

faro_graf_truck_ev_w428.jpg

"Faro" (or "Faro Inc.") is responsible for a lot of wheat-pasted posters featuring an iconic cartoon mummy. These can be founds on buildings aroud Soho and the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Less common is a full-blown spray-can work with the mummy on a truck like the one pictured above from Global Graphica. Massively sick work.

Star Wars Holiday

This Friday marks the 30th anniversary of the ground-breaking (if overrated) science-fiction blockbuster "Star Wars." May 25th is 30 years exactly since the first theatrical release of George Lucas's series of movies playing out the epic saga of Luke Skywalker, Darth Vadar, Yoda, and several generations Jedi knights in their war pitting "the force" and "the dark side." From Thursday through the weekend, a massive convention for "Star Wars" fans will be held in Los Angeles to celebrate the landmark film. May the force be with them.

The New Ridiculously Expensive Maroon 5 CD ...

The widly successful pop-soul-rock outfit Maroon 5 release their second album, titled "It Won't Be Soon Before Long," this week with unusually high financial expectations -- the new CD must sell at least 15 million copies in order for their record-label overlords to break even on their investment i the band. The band's first disc, which was released five years ago, eventually sold 10 million copies worldwide. Pressure? What pressure?

Street Artist Banksy Gets Profiled in the New Yorker ...

If you're anybody of some minor consequence on the verge of being somebody of major consequence, then you know you've become the latter (or have "made it") when you have been profiled in the New Yorker magazine. Britain-based street artist Banksy is the subject of a full profile article in this week's issue of the esteemed New York weekly in a piece titled "Banksy Was Here" by Lauren Collins. Dubbed "the invisible man of graffiti art" -- a description that would apply equally to almost call "graffiti artists" -- Banksy is perhaps the street artist with the biggest name recognition of them all, at least in the United Kingdom. But his art and his name are becoming familiar to the global art world and pop-cultural cognescenti. Banksy is fast becoming the world's first international street-art star.

Shilpa Shetty Film Premieres in London

shilpa_shetty_sb.jpg

From low-brow to high-brow, from Celebrity Big Brother to independent cinema, from launching a curry house chain to launching a perfume, 31-year-old Bollywood movie star Shilpa Shetty has transformed her new global fame swiftly and shrewdly. This weeked witnessed the premiere of new Indian film, "Life in a Metro," in which Shetty plays a neglected homemaker in contemporary India. The movie is a chance for Shetty to showcase her legitimate acting talents to a wider audience. Depending on the film's success and Shetty's performance, Shilpa will either have a long, acclaimed cinematic acting career ahead of her in the West, or she will be best know for running a chain of curry houses.

Video: Graffiti Writers Flash-Tag a Subway Train

This looks a little too staged, a little too easy, but it's pretty cool nonetheless. And the speed and coordination with which this group of taggers throw up these massive pieces of graffiti on the train (while it's still in the station, mind you) is like a carefully choreographed ballet. Impressive, in spite of it being total vandalism.

Paris Hilton Responds to 45-Day Jail Sentence

Ah, poor, poor Paris Hilton. The 26-year-old hotel heiress ad celebutante has commented publicly about the 45-day jail sentence she received for violating the terms of her probation from DUI arrest in 2006. Paris reportedly is calling her punishment "cruel" and "unwarranted," and is quoted as saying "I don't deserve this." Hilton also took action and fired her publicist Elliot Mitz after her sentencing, in effect, blaming him for her predicament. Whatever. We actualy think Paris is being honest on this one -- this is a matter of mistaken information. But it may be a deserved comeuppance in the public eye. And, frankly, seeing Paris in an orange prison jumpsuit is something the public wants as much as the details of her utlra-jet-set party lifestyle.

Shilpa Shetty Plans a Chain of Curry Houses

shilpa_shetty_sb.jpg

"Controversial" Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty is taking advantage of her sudden global fame to start a restaurant chain. Since she garnered worldwide attention as a result of winning "Big Brother" UK (and the racial-abuse scandal that preceded it) and her public kiss of American film star Richard Gere in India, Shetty is under a bigger media glare than ever. She's tasty fodder for the tabloids, taking a lesson from the Paris Hilton playbook on va-jay-jay exposure. And she's the subject of a criminal inquiry in India for her snog with Gere. So what does a transglobal Indian movie star do? Open a chain of curry houses, naturally. The flagship "Shilpa Shetty Dining Hall" restraurant will open in central London, we presume, later this year. Curry, like Shilpa Shetty herself at the moment, is hot!

An Interview with Bjork

The Icelandic songstress Bjork gives an interview to the New York Times about her new album. Bjork is a fascinating artist, but her recent output, including the new album "Volta" haven't been received by her fans or public as positively as her body fo work from the 1990's. We've seen a Bjork a few times, once playing a live a set on stage at the Fuji Rock Festival in Tokyo way back in 1998 -- her performance was stellar. (We also ran into her in a cafe in NYC a couple of years ago, but that's another story.) Can a musician who's CDs leave listeners scratching their heads redeem themselves as live performers? Yes, it's possible.

Snoop Dogg Denied Entry Visa to Australia for MTV Awards ...

First the United Kingdowm rejected him when he toured Europe with Diddy. Now Australia too has denied an entry visa to Snoop Dogg. The D-O-Double-Gizzle was trying to make his way Down Under for the MTV Awards, but the grandaddy of gangsta' rap won't be attending since the "Lucky Country" won't let him in due to his attempt to "cover up" his history of criminal convictions in the United States. Snoop Dogg may have "paid tha' cost to be the boss," as it were, but it appears no amount of cash nor hip-hop cred can get him to Oz.
